The wait is over.
Houma native Sumar Leslie is officially a professional basketball player.
Sumar ended the suspense this afternoon when she signed a contract with the San German Athleticas to extend her playing career.
The deal with the Puerto Rican-based team is for one season and will begin immediately.
“I don’t know if it has hit me yet that this is real,” Sumar said moments after signing her professional contract. “To be able to stand here and call myself a professional basketball player … it’s just a dream come true.
“This is all just proof of what God can do within someone’s life. Without Him, nothing today would be possible.”
Sumar chose the Athleticas after fielding interest from about a half-dozen teams from across the world.
Clad in a Shock H20 shirt, Leslie signed the agreement with a giant smile across her face as family and friends looked on.
She vowed to make everyone proud abroad.
“This is just the first step,” Leslie said. “Now is when the real work starts.”
The San German Athleticas are based in the Puerto Rican women’s basketball league.
The Athleticas finished 3rd place last season. Their season is already under way and they are 5-4 in the league.
Leslie said she hopes to change the team’s fate for the better.
“I want to win a championship,” she exclaimed. “That’s the only goal – to win it all.”
Sumar will play more than a dozen regular season games with the team.
Stay tuned for more updates!
