Fresh off her 11-point, 4 rebound and 5 assist career debut, Sumar and the Atleticas are hungry for a jump in the standings.
They’ll get their chance to see how they fare against the Puerto Rican top dogs tomorrow night.
After a decisive 82-60 win against Ponce, the Atleticas will return to their home floor tonight to take on Morovis.
The first-place team in the Puerto Rican league, Morovis enters play with a 9-2 record.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).
“This is why you play basketball – to play in games against top competition,” Sumar said. “I am not fully acclimated with the league just yet, but to be 9-2, Morovis has to have a great team. I cannot wait to see how we stand against them tomorrow.”
In Sumar’s debut Sunday, it was a tale of two halves for the Atleticas.
With a new lineup trying to mesh, the team limped its way to just a 39-39 halftime tie against Ponce.
But using a second half flurry of sharp shooting and smothering defense, San German outscored Ponce 43-21 in the second half en route to a 82-60 win.
Sumar played 22 minutes in the win, scoring 11 points with 4 rebounds and also 5 assists and 3 steals — both team highs.
“It was a good start,” Sumar said. “The game served its purpose. I got to knock the rust off my game and we got to mesh as a unit. We can’t wait to move forward.”
Morovis enters the game on a roll. In their last game, they defeated 2nd place Carolina by a 81-76 score.
Less than a week ago, they beat San German 87-68.
Morovis is led by American Angelina Williams.
The former Illinois standout averages 18.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
