Atleticas hope to rebound against top-tier team

Victory is on the minds of the Atleticas tonight

The Atleticas need a win.

To snap their losing streak tonight, they’ll need to beat the last team that they beat.

San German will return to the floor tonight at 7 p.m. in a road tilt with Morovis.

The last time the teams tangled, the Atleticas scored a thrilling 79-75 win.

But they haven’t lost since, entering the game with a 12-4 record.

“Morovis is very good, but lately, we’ve been playing against ourselves,” Sumar said. “No disrespect to our opponent, but if we clean up things on our end and play a full 40-minute game, we think we can beat anyone in the league.”

Playing a full 40 minutes is something that has been lost to San German as of late.

In all three games of the team’s current 3-game losing streak, the Athleticas have been plagued by dry spells and lapses on defense.

In the team’s most recent loss — a 96-81 defeat at the hands of Carolina, the Atleticas allowed their opponent to shoot 51 percent from the field.

They also allowed three players to accumulate 78 of the Gigantes’ 96 total points.

“If you allow 96 points, you’re not going to win very many games – if any at all,” Sumar said. “We know the things we have to fix, but saying we’ll fix them and actually doing it are two different things. It’s up to us to work and correct our lapses.”

Against Morovis, San German will be playing a red-hot team.

The 12-4 squad is led by Angelina Williams, who is one of the top players in the entire Puerto Rican league.

In the teams’ Sept. 25 meeting, she scored 20 points and pulled down 8 rebounds with 6 assists.

But San German won that game thanks to 13 points, 7 assists and 5 steals from Sumar and 19 points from Michelle Gonzales.

But Gonzales will be out of the lineup this time around with an injury and the second meeting between the teams will be on the road.

Sumar said she believes the Atleticas are up to the challenge.

“We’ll be ready,” she said. “I really believe we’ll be ready and we’ll have a good night.”

SATURDAY’S GAME CANCELED; PUSHED TO OCT. 16

San German was supposed to play Juncos last Saturday in a road tilt.

We’re not slacking on updates – that game was not played and was postponed when the home team said they couldn’t get an arena for the game.

The contest has been postponed to Oct. 16 and will serve as the team’s final game of the regular season.
