It’s official! Sumar set to begin professional career

The Leslie’s celebrating Sumar’s signing with the San German Athleticas in Puerto Rico.

The wait is over.

Houma native Sumar Leslie is officially a professional basketball player.

Sumar ended the suspense this afternoon when she signed a contract with the San German Athleticas to extend her playing career.

The deal with the Puerto Rican-based team is for one season and will begin immediately.

“I don’t know if it has hit me yet that this is real,” Sumar said moments after signing her professional contract. “To be able to stand here and call myself a professional basketball player … it’s just a dream come true.

“This is all just proof of what God can do within someone’s life. Without Him, nothing today would be possible.”

Sumar chose the Athleticas after fielding interest from about a half-dozen teams from across the world.

Clad in a Shock H20 shirt, Leslie signed the agreement with a giant smile across her face as family and friends looked on.

She vowed to make everyone proud abroad.

“This is just the first step,” Leslie said. “Now is when the real work starts.”

The San German Athleticas are based in the Puerto Rican women’s basketball league.

The Athleticas finished 3rd place last season. Their season is already under way and they are 5-4 in the league.

Leslie said she hopes to change the team’s fate for the better.

“I want to win a championship,” she exclaimed. “That’s the only goal – to win it all.”

Sumar will play more than a dozen regular season games with the team.

Leslie agrees to join Team Shock H20, endorses revolutionary drink

The newest member of Team Shock!

(HOUMA) – The big question everyone wants to know has not yet been answered – Houma professional basketball player Sumar Leslie has not yet chosen her first pro team. That decision is coming in the next few weeks.

But she did join a different kind of team today – one she believes will revolutionize the world of athletic energy.

The Houma point guard announced today that she has agreed to join the Shock H20 energy water team.

With deep local Louisiana roots, the energy water is soon-to-be FDA approved and blends pure water with green tea caffeine – a drink that has no calories, sugar, sodium or any other elements that contribute to poor nutrition.

“Keeping up with my good nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance to me,” Leslie said. “But at the same time, I am a professional athlete, so I need added energy sometimes, so this is a true blessing. I am happy to be a part of the Shock H20 team. It is my humble and honest belief that this product will revolutionize the world of energy drinks and energy waters.”

Leslie’s deal with Shock marks her third endorsement deal since turning professional in April 2012.

The Houma native has also agreed to endorse products created by Wicked Audio in Utah and also HairZing in Tennessee.

She earned the right to hold such distinctions after leading Nicholls State to its best season in school history.

Leslie earned Second-Team All-Southland Conference honors in her senior season, averaging 15.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She also was near the top of the conference with 2.6 steals per game, while shooting 44% from the field and 40% from behind the 3-point line.

The Houma native said she believes that performance will be enhanced now that she is introduced to Shock’s line of products.

“This stuff tastes just like water – it has no aftertaste or anything,” Leslie said. “You can drink it and get pure, productive energy without the crash that you might find in other energy drinks.”

Shock H20 is an energy water supplement based in Birmingham, but it has deep local roots – co-owned by a Lafourche Parish native. It was developed after years of research.

One bottle of the water provides one with a shot of caffeine similar to that in a cup of coffee – without the calories, sugars and sodium in the coffee.

The product’s website boasts that it gets customers “on track to get you through the daily grind.”

Since its inception, the company has picked up steam. It is the official drink of the WBA Exposure League and is also supporters of local fishermen competing in professional angling tournaments.

Sumar gets some local media love

Hard work in the gym gets Sumar some media love as she gets set to start her pro career.

Special thanks to the Daily Comet and the Houma Courier for giving Sumar some love as she prepares for the start of her professional career.

—————

PER DAILY COMET | KATIE TERHUNE

Kathy Luke knew that Sumar Leslie had talent the first time she watched the sixth-grader playing basketball with her brother in Vanderbilt Catholic’s gym.

“She looked like Urkel. She had these big old glasses,” Luke, the Lady Terriers head basketball coach, said. “You wouldn’t have thought much about her, but then you saw her handle a basketball and saw what she could do, and it was incredible.”

Luke’s early intuition about Leslie turned out to be right and 10 years later, the Nicholls State graduate and all-conference basketball player has signed with Connecticut-based sports agency Macklin & Lovett Associates with plans to play professional ball overseas starting in late August.

Leslie said she has several options on where to go, but hesitated to name them until she had reached a decision.

Leslie said she hopes to excel overseas and eventually return to play professionally in the United States.

Sumar signs with Macklin & Lovett Associates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Going to the hole; Southland Conference Tournament 2012

(HOUMA) – Houma native and Nicholls State guard Sumar Leslie is now officially a professional basketball player. The former Vandebilt Catholic High School standout officially dipped into the professional ranks, signing with Connecticut-based sports agency Macklin & Lovett Associates.

The Houma point guard said she chose the agency, who represents some of the top young female players worldwide, over “approximately a half-dozen” agencies who showed interest in her services.

“What I liked about this agency is that they were up-front, forthright and honest about the ways that they could help me progress into my professional career,” Leslie said. “I look forward to this next chapter in my basketball career and I truly believe William Lovett and his agency are the right people to get me started on the right path toward a successful career abroad.”

Leslie lands at the professional level after a highly decorated collegiate career. As a senior at Nicholls State University, the Colonel earned Second-Team All-Southland Conference honors, averaging 15.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She also was near the top of the conference with 2.6 steals per game, while shooting 44% from the field and 40% from behind the 3-point line.

The Houma native said she is projected to begin her career at an upper-mid-level European league.

“Wherever they tell me to go, I will be ready,” Leslie said. “I have been working hard in the gym to stay in shape and in my honest opinion, whoever gives me an opportunity will not regret it.”

Macklin & Lovett Associates is a Connecticut-based agency that specializes in both men and women’s basketball. With a client list that includes female players like KeKe Carrier, Quianna Chaney and recent WNBA draft pick Tyra White, Leslie will be joining one of the upstart agencies in the world of professional basketball.
